Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium screws that replace your natural tooth roots. Dr. Simkha places them into your empty tooth sockets, and they integrate with your jaw or alveolar (the bone that anchors your upper teeth).

After the implants fuse with your bone, they provide a foundation for restorations, like crowns, bridges, or implant-retained dentures.

Are there different types of dental implants?

At Prestige 5th Avenue Dental, Dr. Simkha offers several types of dental implants, including:

Single implants

A single implant replaces one tooth lost to trauma, extraction, or decay. Dr. Simkha places the implant in your empty tooth socket and covers it with a metal-free dental crown.

All-on-4 dental implants

Dr. Simkha recommends All-on-4 implants if you’ve lost most or all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw. All-on-4 implants support a full arch of false teeth with just four dental implants.

Traditionally, patients had to receive one dental implant for each missing tooth. An All-on-4 implant is quicker and less invasive than traditional dental implant surgery.

All-on-6 dental implants

All-on-6 implants are similar to All-on-4 implants. The difference is that Dr. Simkha places six dental implants in your upper or lower jaw instead of four.

What does getting dental implants involve?

Getting dental implants at Prestige 5th Avenue Dental takes several visits.

If Dr. Simkha determines you’re a good candidate, she numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and inserts dental implants into your empty tooth sockets.

The number of dental implants depends on how many teeth you’re missing and the type of implant restoration (for example, crowns, a fixed bridge, or implant-anchored dentures).

Your mouth heals for several months after the placement procedure. During that time, the implants fuse with your jaw or alveolar bone.

You return to Prestige 5th Avenue Dental after your mouth heals. Dr. Simkha takes intraoral scans and sends them to an implant laboratory. Technicians at the lab use your scans to design and create custom implant restorations.

When your implant restorations are ready, you visit Prestige 5th Avenue Dental for a third time. Dr. Simkha attaches the restorations to your dental implants, checks your bite, and provides recovery instructions.
